What if you could transform your work days by focusing on what you naturally do best?

Understanding and leveraging your strengths can lead to improved job satisfaction, optimised performance, and career growth.

Follow these 5 steps to get started on your success story.

Step 1: Identify Your Strengths

The first step to maximising your strengths is to get to know what yours are. It’s critical to take time for self reflection and to gain feedback from those around you to truly understand your strengths and what you’re naturally good at.

Here are some of the ways you can gather this information:

  • Complete an assessment like Gallup's CliftonStrengths which is designed to ask you a range of questions to gauge what you gravitate towards and how you approach certain situations.

  • Seek feedback from fellow workmates, team mates, family and friends. What do you get asked for help with?

  • Reflect on previous wins and successes. What did you enjoy most about the process and the outcome?

Knowing your strengths is the first step to building your confidence and helps you to focus on ‘where to next’.

Step 2: Align Your Strengths with Your Role

Do your strengths match the role you’re in? Once you know your strengths, it's essential to align them with your daily tasks and responsibilities.

How to do this?

  • Review your position description and identify areas where your strengths can be applied.

  • Have a conversation with your leader about aligning more of your role to your strengths.

  • Opt in to projects or tasks that match your strengths.

Discussing your strengths with the important parties at work and then aligning them for maximum mutual benefit can lead to increased job satisfaction, refined productivity and employee engagement - and what boss wouldn't want that?

Step 3: Develop Your Strengths

We like to call this the ‘AIM’ lens where you train yourself to play to your strengths and ultimately improve on what you do best. It’s critical to continually find ways to grow and improve on your strengths - this is your competitive advantage.

How can you aim?

  • Seek out professional development opportunities, such as workshops or courses.

  • Find a mentor who excels in areas you want to develop.

  • Set SMART goals to track your progress.

Developing your strengths can enhance your expertise and future career opportunities.

Step 4: Leverage Your Strengths in Teamwork

Your strengths are a key player in team dynamics and significantly contribute to the overall success.

Find ways to share what you do well and how you can help.

  • Share your strengths with your teammates - communication is key

  • Get to know your teammates strengths and how you can collaborate to compliment each other.

  • Take on roles within the team that play to your strengths and help get the best results.

Leveraging your strengths in a team setting can improve collaboration, build trust and get great outcomes for both you, the team and the business.

Step 5: Reflect and Adjust

To wrap it all up, it’s important to reflect and adjust your strategy as you implement the steps, receive feedback and see results.

It’s an ongoing process and not just a ‘set and forget.

  • Regularly review your performance, both formally and informally and identify areas of improvement.

  • Seek feedback and use your strengths to make the changes required.

  • Adjust your approach and strategies as needed to ensure you’re growing and succeeding.

Following this reflection process helps you to gain momentum and drive long-term success.
